New approach, new blog

I've decided not to use this blog anymore.  Since I'm starting a new approach to my health and wellness it's only appropriate that I have a new blog address.

So from now on, please visit me at http://selfloveandhealing.blogspot.com/

No more WW

Yup, that's right.  No more WW, I am still approximately 92kg and I have cancelled my WW subscription.

No, I am not pregnant.  Or mad.  Well, okay I'll admit to being slightly mad.

I have been going through somewhat of a mental, emotional & spiritual meltdown and remoulding over the last few weeks.  I was at that point where I had to either surrender to whatever it is that I need to surrender to, or give up on life.

It's amazing how when you surrender and ask the universe for help, it responds.

One of the ways in which it has responded is by giving me help in the form of a naturopath in Australia, Julie Merrick, who specialises in helping women with PCOS.  I have known Julie for several years, she is a PCOS sufferer herself and she has been dedicated to finding the solution for women like her.

I was reading Julie's blog yesterday and I came across one of her posts about an American man living in Australia who is revolutionizing the way people lose weight.  Jon Gabriel has written an anti-diet book called The Gabriel Method, and it teaches you how to address the areas of your life that are a source of mental and emotional stress.

Through his studies of biochemistry Jon learned that the body has an internal logic that determines how much you will weigh at any given time. He says that the secret is not to fight against this logic but to work with it.

Mentally and emotionally stressed?  I'll put my hand up to that.

I have ordered Jon's book today, I can't wait to start reading it.

I have also ordered, for a bit of fun and to learn something new, a Bellydancing for Beginners DVD!!  And, The Teachings of Abraham, Master Course CD Set.

Norethisterone, PMS, Aloe Vera

Whenever I gain alot of weight and get to around 90kg, my menstrual cycles go totally out the window and I become anovulatory.  Because I'm not ovulating the lining in my uterus builds up and up until it reaches maximum capacity it then starts to break down and shed away slowly.  By slowly, I mean over weeks or even months.

Recently I endured six weeks of constant light bleeding and I thought I'd refer to Dr Google for some herbal remedy to the problem.  I tried Vitex Agnus Castus aka Chaste Berry, but that only made the bleeding even heavier, it didn't stop the bleeding as I had expected.  So I decided to stop taking it and I went to a Dr, told her my history and she prescribed me with Noresthisterone, a synthetic progestogen.

I took Norethisterone for 10 days which stopped the bleeding but gave me a terrible bout of PMS (anger & bitterness on a scale I've not felt for a long time - thank goodness I was on my own for a few days), then three days after the last tablet was taken, I got my period.  Not a normal period but a really really heavy bleed, very similar to the retroplacental haematoma I had when I was pregnant (the fucking haematoma that claimed my baby's life at 10.5 weeks).

Day one of bleeding was regular and not painful.

Day two of bleeding started with me waking at around 5am and dashing to the bathroom and bleeding heavily.  I went back to bed, only to leap out again in pain and be doubled over while waiting for the pain to pass.  I managed to get back to sleep for a couple of hours, then waking and dashing to the bathroom with another massive bleed.  This continued all day, all the while I managed to clean the house, babysit a puppy, go grocery shopping, make four pizzas and then host a pizza night for a group of hubby's friends.

Day three (today), I am still having some heavy bleeding but it's nowhere near as severe as yesterday's.

I expect the bleeding to continue for 2-3 days, which is a fairly standard time for a period to start and finish for me.  I am hoping that the induced bleed will restore my cycles to normal, but if it doesn't then I will start looking into herbal remedies.

At the moment I am trialling Aloe Vera juice, not for any particular reason but because I have been hearing reports from people about how Aloe Vera (AV) has helped them with various health issues.  AV has a peculiar taste, not a strong taste but one that takes a little getting used to.  It also has a "zingy" effect in the mouth, not fizzy like lemonade though.

AV is widely used in hand creams, beauty products and some healing products like AV gel to relieve sunburn.  The benefits of AV have been disputed (and often downplayed) by modern medicine but there is a slow, growing acceptance of some of AV's healing properties, some of which include

Astringent (dilates capillaries, tightens/firms skin)

Emollient (deeply moisturising)

Anti-fungal

Cell regeneration and plumping (collagen)

Lowering cholesterol and blood lipids

Improving circulation

Soothes inflammation (indigestion, IBS, colitis, heartburn, ulcers, asthma)

Anti-bacterial

Anti-viral (herpes simplex – cold sores)

Boosts immunity
Anti-oxidant (fights free radicals & oxidative stress)

Increases collagen production

Cleansing

Also, compounds extracted from Aloe vera have been used as an immunostimulant that aids in fighting cancers in cats and dogs! (I'm not smart enough to make this stuff up, I found it all on Wikipedia.)

As a sufferer of PCOS and being overweight, I think AV juice could be really beneficial for me because it can help to lower the lipids (fat) in my bloodstream and therefore lower my risk of cardiovascular disease later on in life (or sooner!  So the sooner I start taking AV juice, the better eh?)

Women with PCOS are at risk of such conditions as High blood pressure, Dyslipidemia (disorders of lipid metabolism — cholesterol and triglycerides). Atherosclerosis (thickening/clogging of artery walls by cholesterol), Cardiovascular disease, Strokes and Weight gain (no kidding...?)

When I suffered a stroke in 2004 I underwent alot of blood tests and scans and I was told by the hospital's registrar that I had a build-up on cholesterol around my heart and that I ought to lose some weight (I was probably around the same size that I am now).  That info about the cholesterol scared me, and to this day it still does.  How much pressure and strain is my heart under when I am carrying around so much extra weight?  That is a frightening thought.

So there ya go...  long story, short answer - I think AV juice can be really beneficial for me, so I am giving it a go for a couple of months and just see what happens.

Rubbish

That's all I have been eating.

I totally lost my motivation and have been too lazy to stick to my plan.

Thanks to my friend Pam, who gave me a stern talking to this morning on Skype, I am putting my good habits t-shirt on again and starting afresh tomorrow.

Hubby left this afternoon and is away for 5 nights up north, so I have time to myself to get back into healthy habits and plan our meals.

I have five months left to get into shape for a wedding at the end of September and I have been searching Ebay (both UK and Australia sites) for a nice dress.  I decided a few weeks ago that I want to wear a 1920's cloche hat with the dress but the dress doesn't have to be a strictly 1920's style itself.  I'm not familiar with UK dress shops so can anyone recommend any to me?

Good morning!

After waking up with the sun shining on my face this morning, I have had a great start to today.  Crumpets and 2 serves of fruit for breakfast, I've put out a load of washing and have another load half done!  The weather has definitely had an impact on my energy levels, I am more motivated to get things done when the sun is pouring down on me.

We have had a slight change in our plans to move house and change jobs, both have been brought forward to July, but I am still giving myself until September to reach my goal measurements.  My dear friend Susie is getting married on the 24th, so I will probably fly back to Aus around the 17th and buy an outfit for the wedding there.  As it will be Spring in the south and the wedding will be at Lake Crackenback in Jindabyne I am thinking of a lovely dress and elegant wrap for the occasion.

Inspiring women

If you think you have seen the following post before on another blog, you'd be right.  I have decided to retire that blog but I have imported some posts which I feel are really relevant to this new blog.

So here are some women who I think are real, sexy, curvy and totally inspiring!

Beyonce Knowles 34-26-40

Martine McCutcheon 36-28-38

 Marylin Monroe 36-23-37

Lucy Lawless 36-25-36

Other curvy women:

Kate Richie (Sally on Home and Away) 40-26-37
Kate Winslet 36-29-38

The main point I have to keep in mind is the waist-hip ratio.

"A WHR of 0.7 for women and 0.9 for men have been shown to correlate strongly with general health and fertility."

So it doesn't matter that my proportions aren't exactly the same as any of these women, what matters is my WHR and how comfortable I am with my curves.

Magic Measure

This amazing little product is going to become my friend over the next six months!

These are the parts of the body I will be measuring every two weeks with the help of my hubby.
